Today I thought I would share some of my DIY ideas with you for entertaining and gift-giving. The first two were in the Express article, but I didn’t have any pictures of my ideas, so they generously are letting me share the images with you.
Velvet Ribbon Napkin Rings
I did a post on Velvet Belts earlier, and had previously seen Grosgrain Napkin Rings on HB. So I thought a good DIY project would be to marry the two for a festive holiday touch. My friend, who wrote the article, actually made these herself. “Crisp velvet ribbon holders say regal-yet-mod. To make the rings, cut a 6-inch piece of 2-inch ribbon, fold in half, attaching a D-ring at midway point. Then, join with no-sew fuse tape ($5, fabric stores).”
Sriracha Spiced Pecans
These Sriracha Spiced Pecans are addictive! I took a basic recipe and decided to make it my own by using what I had in the cupboard, and then adding the sugar to help tame the heat. Definitely work quickly once you take them out of the oven. I accidentally let one batch cool on the parchment, and they were so hard to get off!
To make, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread 2 cups of pecan halves on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake 10 minutes. Remove nuts and toss, in a bowl, with 4 tbsp Sriracha chili sauce (reduce if your guests tend to be fiery food-resistant), 1/2 tbsp salt and 1/2 cup brown sugar. Again, spread nuts on cookie sheet, and bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes, turning nuts twice. Spread on foil to cool.
I don’t have step by step pictures of these, but they are easy (if I can do it…). If you want detailed pictures, let me know and I can take some tonight.
1” Scrapbook Punch
Long sewing pins with pearl tips
3” styrofoam balls
You start pin the ribbon at the top using 2 discs, and then spiral your way around the ball, overlapping the discs as you go. I love that they look rather vintage, and since I inherited a lot of vintage from my Dad, I think they are great. And they won’t break! Great if you have kids in the house.
