"Some people think that white is the absence of color. But that is exactly what it is not! White is produced by combining all of the visible colors of light in equal proportions. While blue is the most popular, since the early 20th century there has been no color more important in interior design than white. And so, there are more commercially available shades of white paint than of any other color." - James Duncan, White: More than Just the Absence of Color
In decorating, white is such a versatile color. In modern dwellings, white can be an effective foil for artwork or architecture, but all-white rooms can look stark. However, in other homes, white is an effective counterpoint to color.
For instance, we started on our game room upstairs, but never quite finished the walls (to my liking). This is the room where we watch movies, so I wanted yellow, as it reflects light. I think our current color is a little too bright, so perhaps a little deeper color. I may go look at French Quarter Gold from Benjamin Moore, to see if it is too dark. So after we finish the wall color, I will bring in white accessories, to keep the brights from overwhelming the room.
Here are some examples of how white accessories and furniture help to keep these painted rooms from feeling too heavy; keeping them fresh.

From the Archives: 101 Easy Makeovers
Here are some highlights:
I am going to try and see how many of the 101 ideas I can incorporate. Some, I have already done, such as #18 - add a long bench to the end of your bed, (however, don't throw clothes on it like I do) or #64, using Chinese Garden stools as coffee tables (or in my case a side table, this was a sample sale buy for $15!! They normally sell for hundreds of dollars!)

Style Guides from Decorati.com
Occasionally, I have to be careful when discussing my passion for design, especially for Mid-century modern. Friends begin to get blank looks when I start to wax poetic about Saarinen, Eames, or Eileen Gray.
However, in order to know what you like, it helps to put a name to your style (or styles if you want to mix it up). I found these style guides from Decorati; they are a great starting point.

50 Ways to Perk Up a Kitchen

In the recent Style at Home, there were 50 Cheap & Chic Kitchen Perk-ups. Don't you just love easy and simple ways, to shake it up around the house? I know I do.
Let me know what you plan to do in your kitchen. I for one, will stop feeling guilty, about throwing away chipped dishes.
1. Elevate the everyday – invest in a set of handmade cereal bowls.
2 Granny Smith apples – a stylist's secret weapon – are a pretty countertop accent and a healthy snack all in one.
3 When was the last time your toaster made toast the way you like it? If you can’t remember, it's time for a new one.
4 Use a bench with storage as a kitchen banquette.
5 Treat yourself to a fresh set of dishtowels. Reuse the old ones as rags to polish silver, shine shoes or wipe up paint spills.
6 Display a vintage dishware collection on open shelves.
7 Hot-glue a seldom used vintage kitchen utensil in a shadow box and start a collection to adorn your walls.
8 Overhaul the area under your sink cabinet to make room for garbage, recycling and composting.
9 Bake a pie or layer cake – your kitchen will be transformed in less than an hour.
10 Hide the counter clutter of keys, cellphones and sunglasses inside a Moroccan tajine.
11 Remove everything from the tops of cabinets. Thoroughly clean the area. Do not replace the items!
12 Get rid of any chipped plates or cups – they're getting you down.
13 Dress the windowsill with two or three pots of moss or herbs.
14 If you have glass door cabinets but can't keep what’s inside looking tidy, line the glass panels with wallpaper or fabric, or apply frosted window film.
15 Install energy-efficient under cabinet lighting.
16 Use crystal flutes for your orange juice tomorrow morning. Champagne optional!
17 Create a photo wall of family members with their birthday cakes over the years.
18 Conceal scratches or dents on an old fridge with decorative wall decals.
19 A rough-hewn wooden bowl looks just as great empty as it does filled with rustic breads, artichokes or newspapers.
20 If there isn't a window above your sink, hang a mirror there.
21 Add French flair: opt for a rustic table and chairs in the centre of your kitchen rather than an island.
22 Wallpaper the ceiling.
23 Tall ceilings? Install a large nontypical central light, like a chandelier, lantern or industrial pendant.
24 Cook up some natural air freshener: In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of apple cider to a simmer. Add a few slices of lemon, cinnamon sticks and 1 tsp whole cloves. Simmer for a couple of hours, adding more cider as it evaporates.
25 Hang a fabric blind with an elegant swag for a touch of grandeur.
26 A potted orchid in a white ceramic pot is a sophisticated living accessory that lasts longer than cut stems.
27 Install a new faucet.
28 Use a shallow baking dish to store cooking essentials by the cooktop or stove. It will keep everything exactly where you need it and save your counter from oil rings and pepper grinder debris. Decant olive oil into an opaque or dark glass bottle to protect it from light.
29 Treat yourself to a new set of canisters.
30 Say no to paper napkins and switch to a colourful fabric set.
31 Switch out your dated kitchen chairs for black Windsor chairs. They're a design classic – great with mod or trad tables.
32 Remove a pair of cupboard doors and style the open shelves with your prettiest things.
33 Install invisible touch-latch hardware for a sleek, modern look.
34 Hang wallpaper as a backsplash. Protect it with acrylic or glass panels custom cut and installed by a glazier.
35 Leave only your chicest small appliances on the counter.
36 Conceal an ugly backsplash behind peel-andstick Smart Tiles.
37 Banish old knobs in favour of sexy new ones.
38 Conquer the junk drawer.
39 Get a handsome mortar and pestle. When you aren't using it to muddle mint for a mojito, press it into service as a bookend for cookbooks.
40 Paint your cabinets nature's neutral – green. It will look great with all your fruits and veg.
41 Display a pineapple when you're expecting guests – it's the universal symbol of welcome.
42 Make a pretty message board by placing fabric or decorative paper behind the glass of a large frame. Then use a dry erase marker to write on the front.
43 Add shaped brackets along the toe kick to make your cabinets look like fine furniture.
44 Install decorative casing trim around your pass-through.
45 Banish the smelly dishcloth hanging over the faucet! Organize your sinkside essentials on a rectangular dish or tray. The must-haves: dish soap in a pretty container (or decant some into a translucent white squeeze bottle), an all-natural cellulose sponge for dishwashing, a scrub brush and a plastic scrubber for pots.
46 Install a plate rack. Use it to display a collection of platters or cookbooks.
47 Splurge on a marble-top dining table for your best friend.
48 Keep utensils contained and at the ready in a plain white pitcher – it goes with any kitchen.
49 Perk up a family table with cheerful oilcloth that you can wipe clean in a flash.
50 The next time you buy groceries, bring home a bunch of daisies for the kitchen table.

Design for a $1 or Less

Sometimes, less, is more!
PointClickHome has great selections of design deals. Designs for less than a $1, what a bargain, then you can buy in multiples! I have the IKEA Kardemumma pots, but in the larger size. Still prices range from only $1.99-$24.99 for the larger sizes. My favorite style is the one with the vertical lines. Clean & contemporary.

Distilled to the Essence
Architectural Digest has been full of such fabulous interiors the last couple of months. So many to look at and share with you! Of course, it is not the same as reading the magazine yourself, so support your favorite shelter magazines!
In Distilled to the Essence, designer Karin Blake did a beautiful job of combing traditional and modern, the result being a refreshing take on folk art.
The husband grew up in a traditional old home, full of Americana, on the East Coast. The wife is the daughter of an architect, who designed modern beach houses, in Malibu. Together, their combined aesthetics, helped to create an inviting home.
Wood paneling and cozy leather couches in the family room.A pop of color is provided by the 1931 Mobil Pegasus.
Look at this bathroom, which opens to a private garden. Heavenly!Best quote: “Clean and open, with things on the wall that are happy and fun and you don’t get tired of. I get hives around clutter.”

Affordable Art - L. Herbert Designs
I promise not to inundate you with art, but I do so love it, and love that the Internet has made it easy to find affordable and unique items. While perusing sites the other day, I visited the Nesting Place and saw these beautiful shell prints from L. Herbert Designs.
So many friends love the beach, and make the annual trek each summer. Now you can bring a little of the beach home. Frame these and group in sets of three, four, six, nine; their affordable prices make it easy to buy in multiples. 5x7's are $7.oo, and 8x10's are $18.00. Amazing prices!
The original paintings were painted with watercolors, and the prints are reproduced on fine art paper, printed in a giclée process. Visit her shop, to order these and many other designs.
In addition, Laryssa has graciously extended 10% off your order through August 21st, to us. Be sure to use the code: Summer Fun. If you order, please be sure to tell her that I sent you!

Attention to Details
I have had this image from Domino, for a DIY molding project. So attracted to the darker walls and the white molding.
We painted our living room Alexandria Beige, a great neutral color. The inspiration came a Pennsylvania house done by Jeffrey Bilhuber. I had always fought against the gray in our ceramic tile, but decided that I loved this "modernist version of a barn", and it really opened my color palette.
Curious to see what you all think of this look.

La Plates - Personalized Melamine Plates
Funny how good things keep popping up!
I am a little behind on my magazines, and had just pulled out a tear sheet from Country Living, featuring La Plates in gingham. Gingham is not my style, but I loved that these were monogrammed, melamine plates! The next day, a friend joined their Facebook fan page, it showed up in my news feed; so it was fated to write about them.
So many styles and fonts, how do you choose? At least I narrowed it down to my top three.

Mad Men Style from House Beautiful

Just to show, good style is classic! If you have been around since 1896, you probably have treasure trove of great design. So, in the style of Mad Men, are the best of the 1960's from House Beautiful.
This room has asymmetrical placing of elements, preferred by the Japanese. Would look as good today as it did in September 1960.
Hexagonal snack tables can be used interchangeably in living, dining, or bedroom alone or grouped together.P.S. If you like my swanky avatar, Mad Men Yourself and get your own.

Smudge Ink & Give-away
Yesterday, I took a quick trip to The Container Store, to buy just ONE thing. As you can see from the above picture, I found a lot more. Lots of items on clearance & on sale: ribbon that was $3.99, now 67 cents, the pink notebook was $9.99, now 97 cents, bamboo boxes, gift wrap, gift bags and more. Lots of discontinued items, hence the deep discounts.
I bought items in bulk, for my gift closet; for organization; and for my first give-away (more details at the end of the post). Thought the pink & green shoppers from Smudge Ink were great. Made of 30% recycled material, reusable and fully recyclable with other household plastics. I felt so sassy at Sprouts, toting my groceries.
Smudge Ink also has a great line of letterpress or printed notecards, notepads and imprintables.

Now for the August Give-away. One person will get a set of shoppers (the ones featured in my picture), one pink & one green, retail value $19.99. Courtesy of me!

I Dream...of an Airstream
Every time we take a road trip, the Airstream dream begins. It started last year, when we spent 17 days on the road, seeing Yellowstone, Banff and other amazing parks. I kept thinking how nice it would be to not have to pay for a hotel, change rooms every couple of days, pay a small fortune to board our dogs, etc.
Never would I have imagined how much I would enjoy our last couple of road trips, perhaps, it goes back to my childhood. My grandparents had multiple Airstream trailers, and during summers, we would go on rallies with them. As a child, it was a great adventure, including homemade peach ice cream and dominoes.
Lest you think that only your grandparents generation drives an Airstream, check out Matthew McConaughey and his Airstream, in Architectural Digest. Of course, his has custom interiors, but it is fun to peak inside. In their current line, the Design Within Reach model and the Victorinox Special Edition model both are super stylish. Their retro styling complements the mid-century modern vibe I love, and the Museum of Modern Art agrees.
They are an investment, but Airstreams can easily last 40 years and more, rather than the conventional trailer's typical life of 15 years. Over 70% of all Airstreams ever made are still on the road today! Maybe one day, my dream will become a reality. Stay tuned...

Light Wines for Hot Days

Back to Texas, after 4000 miles on the road (versus $2200 for plane tickets)!
We laid my husband's sweet grandmother to rest last Monday, so the weekend was filled with joy, tears, watermelon and rollkuchen, a Southern Manitoba staple. We decided to take the slow way home, and drove through the Black Hills of South Dakota, seeing Mt. Rushmore, a million bikers on their way to Sturgis, wildlife and more! I will be posting pictures on my Facebook page for MDS. Then, we made our way to Colorado, through Kansas and back home.
So much to think about and see while spending hours in the car. I have so many blog ideas in my head, and will be sharing them soon! Now, back to Texas, and to the HEAT! After days, where the temperature was in the 50's and 60's, coming back to the 90's was the first thing we noticed yesterday.
So, to enjoy August and endure the dog days of summer, here are 10 Terrific Light Wines. Low in alcohol, but light and refreshing, something we could all enjoy any time of the year.
In the mood for something else? Ready yourself for rosé and the new generation of boxed wines (no Franzia here, baby)!
